Fearless Change in Difficult Times
Paula Donnelly Roark
In these difficult times many people still hope that our problems can be solved simply with better politics and policies. Sadly that is not true—our crises are more profound than simple politics. Instead, for true change, we need something more comprehensive, more profound; something like a culture shift, even a collective change of consciousness. It is exactly here that Fearless Change in Difficult Times situates itself. It illustrates how ‘deep participation’ and ‘social integrative power’ —the heart of this book—operate at that pivotal juncture between the political and the social. Clarifying this critical interface makes all the difference. It is only here that society’s cultural and participatory dynamics produce the social legitimacy and ‘license to operate’, necessary for true and lasting social change.

Social Justice and Deep Participation: Theory and Practice for the 21st Century
Paula Donnelly Roark
Palgrave Macmillan 2015
Social Justice and Deep Participation, based on original research, challenges our status quo, and offers the means to change it as well. Theory and practice are interactively merged to formulate a participatory social theory that supports practitioners and involves social theorists in further exploration and analysis. Deep participation dynamics—inclusive, complex, and interactive—can create a stabilized social energy that allows an integrative power to emerge so that groups and societies can “culturally re-image” their social compacts and critical social institutions. It is these guiding social institutions and thought-worlds, through their maintenance of human connection and social learning which offer social legitimacy. They then collectively re-organize and sustain the social, political, and economic institutions within any given society.
